Many of you may have heard or are familiar with the word hacking & many of you may not think hackers would ever get into your devices not because they are secure or insecure but because you don't think hackers would spend the time trying to get into your home when there are bigger fish in the ocean (corporate america). Well the latest news shows us this is not the case. There have been hacks across the country on Ring and Nest products where hackers are gaining access to these devices and talking to the people in there homes leaving customers feeling violated and vulnerable. (Here is a link from a trade magazine https://www.securitysales.com/emerging-tech/cybersecurity-tech/hackers-ring-security-cameras/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=content&eid=440471586&bid=2573231)
Ring has issued a statement indicating that there are no problems with their hardware and that much of the problem lies with the customers passwords and home security. While we at Intuitiv Technology Solutions have found this to be true we have also questioned these big companies of misleading or misinforming there markets by not properly educating them. The whole premise of do it yourself & plug and play negates very serious security issues. In many cases if you were to follow a security experts advice you may not be able to use your device as intended.
So what can you do to protect your home and still benefit from the internet of things. number one secure your device by using a good password using a minimum 8 character password that consists of letters small & capital, numbers,& special characters. Number two hire or get a friend you know in the IT field to help you secure your home network. Networking gets quite complex and most companies like ring have made it very easy for you to setup your own system. The problem is without proper knowledge you are unknowingly leaving yourself exposed to many potential problems.
